In the article, author concluded that the Saluda Natural Spring Water is a good investment in good health. He gave out the reasons that the water contains several minerals necessary for good health, and the water is free of bacteria. Also, the frequency of people in Saluda going to hospital is less than the national average. Although the idea sounds persuasive, the argument suffers several flaws below.
First, the author believed that the minerals contained in the Saluda Natural Spring Water must can help people keep in good health. However, those minerals probably just part of factors of standing in good health. To living in the good health, only those minerals from the water are not enough. We also need to balance some other necessary factors from other resources to keep us in health. Thus, we cannot think that only the minerals from the Saluda Natural Spring Water are enough for us to keep in good health.
Second, author further guaranteed that the residents of Saluda are hospitalized less frequently than the national average. By citing this fact, the author tried to mislead us believe that people in Saluda going to hospital less because of the local Spring water. However, the assumption could be undermined if the people going to hospital less because of other reasons. For example, the hospitals are not convenient for the residents, so the resident are less likely to go the hospital. Or, the local people have good living habits and less bad habits, which cause them less likely to get illness.
Third, even if two factors above are clarified, there is also an alternative concern. The article only said that “Laboratory studies show that”, but it doesn’t introduce what kind of laboratory studies and how the studies do the research to conclude the result. Therefore, there are less detailed information about the “Laboratory studies”. We don’t know if the “Laboratory studies” is from authority organization or it stands in the neutral to make the argument.
In conclusion, the argument is far from convincing based on the current content and structure. To better evaluate the argument, we need to know more about the background of the Laboratory studies and detailed information about the local residents’ living situation.
