What was your position on the Debate Question after doing the reading? What in the reading was the most convincing point?
My position on both of the debate questions was affirmative prior to the reading.
My position changed a bit after the reading on both subjects. In terms for brothers and sisters, the strongest point that really hit me was the fact that both parties can benefit from each other no matter how bad the circumstances are between both parties. The only circumstance where it is okay to stop the relationship is if the relationship is causing irreversible emotional damage and personal welfare.
I believe in what Mill has to say about the bare minimum for children and parents as well as brothers and sisters. I believe it is important to say in contact with each other and share both parties’ lives. The fact that both parties did not choose each other makes it unique. This bond makes it for life and both parties cannot be separated no matter how badly they want their relationship to end. They are bonded for life. This means they can either try to fix the relationship in hopes that it will make both of them happier or ignore it and cause emotional pain for both parties. It is literally a life time progress.
In terms for parents and children, parents have a moral obligation to try to be there for their children and provide intrinsic value items. Parents need to be patient and understand that children go through a lot of phases as they grow up. For example, one day their children might hate you and the next, they might love you. On the children side, children must understand that their parents are providing them with the necessary tools to stay alive with includes a roof, food, and transportation. I do not believe that children should always have to share their life stories with their parents because often times parents do not have the most understanding and accepting views. Parent’s judgment often makes it difficult for a kid to feel accepted. Thus, it is okay for their children not to always share important details about their lives.
