CLIL Basketball English Lesson Overview
Basketball Basics
Content
Participants will become familiar with the most common verbs, player positions and actions in the game of Basketball.
Vocabulary
Verbs: dribble, pass, shoot, defend, run, jump, throw, catch
Noun: Positions on the basketball court -guard, forward, center (and what each is responsible for), coach and referee
Types of shots- lay ups, jump shots, free throw (foul shot) and three-point shot
Types of passes- chest pass, bounce pass, over-head pass and hook pass
Rules- Students will be introduced to a few very rudimentary rules of basketball
Cognition
Students will be given several cognitive exercises with which they can practice and internalize the new vocabulary and grammar structure. The exercises will be generated to be congruous with the various grammar, written and oral production profile requirements of the CEFR. Furthermore, all activities will be produced using the principles and formulations of Bloom’s and Anderson’s taxonomies.
Communication
Simple present tense- students will be provided with a brief explanation of when to use the simple present. Student should be able to understand and produce input using this tense accurately
Collocations- Student will be given the most common verbs that collocate with the new vocabulary
That or Who clauses- students will be asked to identify a rule for when to use that or who A point guard is a player who makes passes/ A bounce pass is a pass that hits the floor before being caught.
Interrogatives- Students will demonstrate the ability to employ the correct question words in a given context
Permission- Students will learn how to express themselves in situation where something is forbidden or against the rules: can or can’t/ allowed to or not allowed to.
Culture
Students will ponder the ways in which the information they learn during the language portion of the class may be useful to them during the subsequent practical portion of the class
Students will be encouraged to name some basketball players that they have heard of. They will be invited to talk about that player’s position on the team and responsibilities
