article picture. Meryl on the other hand is a crucial part of Nicks advancements in the text as her company kept his mind off death and instead on her. The fast forwarding of the photos at the end of the text show his ongoing life and how he hasn’t given up, the film doesn’t show us what happens at the end however it is fair to assume that all the people in Nick’s life would’ve helped him in his battle with cancer. Jeffersons community is vastly different and they too help him face his death, however Jefferson also stands up for his community portraying as a hero. Grant a main character in Jeffersons life had the whole black community behind him as he tried to convince Jefferson to walk to that chair a man. Grant continuously quotes "I’m not as brave as you Jefferson", this quote refers to not only Jefferson but the whole community as they too weren’t brave as they conformed to the whites. Grant and Aunt Emma’s love was the main reason that changed Jefferson into walking to that chair a man not a hog. His decision to walk to that chair not crawl was a stand for equality amongst the races as he revoked the standards set by the whites. This is a major stand for his people and it shows how his community influenced them by doing almost nothing, their pain was what drove Jefferson into giving his life a purpose a he became a hero for current and future generations of African Americans.
In conclusion both Nick and Jefferson must confront death sooner then others and the ways they handle it are different but their ideals are similar. At the beginning of the text both protagonists are faced with their upcoming deaths and they both are very pessimistic and negative as they dwelled upon the point of their existence and what they have accomplished. Both of their communities helped them realise their greater purpose and how their actions had repercussions on the people in their lives. To conclude life is a precious thing and is a horrible thing to be taken away, however in the mists of darkness the characters achieved a great feat in the end, this is the case as their approach towards death gradually changes and they both become better men than then the men depicted at the start of their stories.
