Even more, the movie Pearl Harbor, directed by Micheal Bay, is a historical movie based on a true event that stroked the United States back in 1941. The movie depicts the story of two main characters named Rafe McCawley and Danny Walker dreaming to be fighter pilots. However, it is worth knowing that the two characters are fictional and it was intended by Micheal Bay to create a story with drama. In short, just right after the attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese, Colonel Doolittle recruited Rafe and Danny to fly in the raid on Tokyo. He said, “there's nothing stronger than the heart of a volunteer” to them before accepting the mission. Relating to historical records that I’ve read in an article few years ago, I’ve noticed something odd. Both Rafe and Danny are single-engined fighter pilots, which means that they would not be qualified to fly multi-engined bombers. Although the B-25 Mitchell bomber is an easy plane to fly, the participants would have come from qualified bombardment squadrons. The pilots on the actual raid largely were recruited from the 34th Bombardment Squadron of the 17th Bombardment Group as I’ve read an article in TIME Magazine. Personally, I think it is very important for the viewers to know about the movie’s inaccuracies. The fact that the main characters in the movie are fictional and some of the scenes are not based on factual events. It is worth remembering that the purpose of this historical movie was to let viewers learn the history of the attack on Pearl Harbor. Nonetheless, due to Micheal Bay’s personal interest, the movie seems to be deviated away from informing the real history and making a dramatic movie instead. As a consequence, it may result into the misinterpretation that both of the main characters are factual by the viewers.
It is evident that the movies American Sniper, Lone Survivor, and Pearl Harbor are considered to be inaccurate. Some of the scenes in the movies are modified and fictional, intentionally, by the directors to create a more interesting plot. I couldn’t stress enough the importance for society to understand the true history of an event, because not until can people admire the achievements and heroic actions. Personally I think that directors today are deviated away from the real purpose of making historical movies. As historical movies were made to teach viewers about history, especially when it is stated as “based on actual events” in the beginning of a movie. Ultimately, modifying a story line will just make viewers to misinterpret and misunderstand history. Not only does it brings disadvantages to the society, it’ll also dishonor and disrespect the heroes of war.
