It is clear enough that anger has a lot of serious consequences if it is not addressed early enough. Anger might cause fights which may in turn lead to unhealthy relationships. Such unhealthy relationships may lead to divorce and even loss of jobs (Gentry, 2011). When this happens individuals are likely to undergo depression which might have serious health effects on them. All hope is not lost as there are a number of tips to aid in anger management. If individuals seek out help from a psychologist they might end up being able to control their anger. (Tafrate and Kassinove, 2009).
It is important for individuals who get angry easily to become anger aware. Being anger aware simply means that the individuals should identify triggers that cause them to become angry easily. Once such triggers have been identified it is advisable that they refrain from any activity that causes them to be angry (Gupta, 2008). It is advisable to talk to someone so as to be accountable to them. Talking to someone more so a specialist helps anger victims a lot in identifying the anger triggers and ways of avoiding those tiggers (Gentry, 2011).
Relaxing is a key aspect in anger management. The anger victims should try and relax when they find themselves in situations that are likely to make them angry. Breathing in and out heavily when angered is a great technique that can help an individual to cope up with anger. Research shows that relaxing by taking deep breaths tends to lower rising tension. Upon relaxing an individual is able to voice out their frustrations in a constructive and healthy manner (Gupta, 2008).
A change in the way of thinking of an individual helps them manage their anger issues effectively. By changing the way of thinking an individual thinks things out before they do something. Hence before an individual physically or verbally abuses someone they are able to think through the consequences and refrain (Gupta, 2008). Positive and rational thoughts helps an individual to see the brighter side of things. This helps them be positive in all they do (Gentry, 2011).
Better communication is an anger management tool that helps individuals to avoid overreacting when they are angry. Angry people easily jump to conclusions without listening to other parties. Better communication helps individuals to iron out issues effectively without necessarily having to engage in fights and heated debates (Tafrate and Kassinove, 2009). Effective communication can help individuals to calm down and to always give people a chance to express themselves without any form of discrimination. Better communication helps anger victims to more patient with other people (Gentry, 2011).
Changing the environment by taking time outs helps individuals with anger problems. Sometimes an individual’s immediate surrounding may trigger them to become angry (Gupta, 2008). When they take some time out of their normal routine they are able to be distracted from possible triggers of anger. This helps them to cool down and relax their minds and meditate on other things that may not be a source of anger for them. Time outs also prepare an individual for greater challenges ahead. Taking a walk or listening to some good soothing music can help an angry individual calm down (Tafrate and Kassinove, 2009).
Humor plays a key role in defusing anger in an individual. Humor has a way of making an individual have a proper way of thinking without being biased. In one way humor also makes an individual relax and think through things logically. Humor should however not be used to hide the underlying frustration. It should be used to defuse the frustration and make individuals to have a more balanced and perspective life (Gupta, 2008).
Engaging in physical activities such as swimming, jogging, playing football and doing regular exercise may help an individual calm down by releasing tension. Physical activity makes an individual release any tension that could have resulted in them making uncalled for decisions (Gentry, 2011). Physical activities may also distract an individual from possible triggers of anger. Seeking for help from a professional may help an individual to manage their anger effectively. Talking out what is disturbing someone helps in reliving possible tension (Gupta, 2008).
In conclusion anger management is a key component in helping out individuals who have anger issues. Anger can be managed if the individual notices they have the problem and are willing to be assisted.
