Those impeccable city lights and flashy buildings stuck in our heads so once we entered the “Bronx” that image was immediately ruined. This was the start of many hardships.

In Greece everyone spoke Greek and where we lived everyone knew each other. You felt safe and you didn’t have to worry about letting your kids play outside all day until it got dark. We learned the hard way that his wasn’t the case in the Bronx as my sister was robbed multiple times at a young age, my mother chased and my father almost beat. We learned that people weren’t too friendly and it was difficult to even try to be friendly because we didn’t know how to speak English. It was frustrating having to learn, read and write a whole new language. My sister would cry when people would ask her “What is your name” she had no idea what it meant and would always run away.

We needed help and assistance from other family members because we were unable to rent our own home because we needed “good credit”, “pay stubs”, and a source of income. Luckily my parents had saved a good amount of money to be able to survive for a year or two but we didn’t have things as good credit and paystubs in Greece as these things weren’t necessary back then to rent out an apartment so family members had to sign for us, put their name on the lease and assure that they would be responsible for everything. Everyone knows it’s difficult when you work with family and have them do you favors especially when money or credit is involved.
