In St. Louis, Missouri a research project run by Washington University from 2007 to 2011 provided free contraception and education to thousands of women in the area. The participants of the study were woman between the ages of 14 and 45. “Teenage participants experienced a birth rate of 6.3 per 1,000 girls, compared with the national rate of 34.3”. (Bernhard) According to Paula Gianino, President of Planned Parenthood St. Louis, “without a doubt if we remove the barriers of cost, women will choose the most effective methods that will help prevent unintended pregnancy and abortion”. (Bernhard) Some will argue that providing free contraception could lead to more risky sexual behavior. While I agree with them in the sense that regardless of what method of contraception is used to prevent unintended pregnancy condoms are necessary to avoid sexually transmitted diseases.
Communicating Both Abstinence and Contraception Education
Preventing unintended teen pregnancy is the responsibility of society as a whole. It is critical that facts are communicated, not religious or political ideology. Teenagers need to be given complete and factual information in order to make informed decisions on how best to prevent an unintended pregnancy. There are some that will choose to abstain and others may choose contraception. The actual choice is not what matters. Preventing unintended teen pregnancy is the goal through communicating honestly, openly, and most of all factually.
