This study is important because the finding highlight the importance of performing longitudinal microbiome studies to examine the influence of microbial communities on health and disease. With recent health concerns regarding the development of antibiotic resistance, understanding how current treatment affect bacteria and subsequent diseases activity will allow us to identify and develop directed therapies for AD that modify the skin microbiome, potentially reducing the use of systemic antibiotic.
The article, “ Temporal shift in the skin microbiome associated with disease flares and treatment in children with atopic dermatitis by Kong et al. address how there is a shift in bacterial diversity during flares and post-treatment. It was clear from the abstract of the article that this is no sample issue. In fact the article was fairly confusing for the first few paragraphs. The authors start by giving definitions in the abstracts and just jumped to the results, without an introduction paragraph. Everything was introduced in the abstract, but I would rather have an introduction paragraph to work off of. Overall this article isn’t straightforward in the beginning and it’s not until the second page that you realize where the article is headed. In order to have more people engaged and read the whole article it needs a more concise introduction. The piece, when taken as a whole, is relevant to the topic and gave us some insight into the shift that occurs during AD flare.
