Ethos (Greek for character) appeals to people’s credibility. Using ethos just puts the writer or speakers point of view out there in a different way for the audience to interpret. Sometimes the writer’s reputation can affect the way people or certain situations might impact the way the audience feels about the message that is being portrayed. Clinton is a credible speaker because she is well-known. Clinton has also proved that women are just as equal as men.
Hillary has shown good-will and is highly respected in the women community. During her husband’s tenure, she had co-founded the Arkansas Advocates for Children and Families and served as a board member of Arkansas Children Hospital. Hillary spends her time focusing on public service and fighting for the rights of other. “It’s this commitment to public service and fighting for others- especially children and families that she’s carried all her life.”(Biography, n.d.) Her loyal commitment to this contractual obligation just goes to show you where her heart truly lies.
In analyzing Hillary Clinton’s speech she starts off addressing the nations and saying thank you to the Secretary of General for the United Nations. Clinton refers to the conference for women as a “coming together”. Women come together every day in their work place, local super markets, and villages. Clinton compares certain duties performed by different women from all over the world. All the women come together to talk about apparitions and concerns. She goes on to say that no matter how different we may be or far apart that we are, there still is a common ground between us all. “By gathering in Beijing, we are focusing world attention on issues that matter most in the lives of women and their families. Access to educations, healthcare, jobs and credit, the chance to enjoy basic legal and human rights and participate freely in the political lives of their countries.” (Clinton 1995) Clinton goes on to say that this conference will look and face the world’s most pressing problems. In her speech she says that ten years prior she was in conference in Nairobi and domestic violence was addressed and brought to everyone’s attention. Hillary wants the world to know that if women are taken care of and are treated well then their families will flourish and do well also. She has met many women from around the world with different cultures and experiences. In this part of her speech she uses her voice to be heard for all others who cannot express their opinion. Hillary goes on to say that since she is American she wants to speak up for all the women in her country that are deprived as well. You never know what women have to go through in their daily lives. “The truth is that most women around the world work both inside and outside the home, usually by necessity.” She goes on to say that there is no set way on how women should lead their lives. “We need to understand that there is no formula for how women should lead their lives. That is why we must respect the choices that each woman makes for herself and her family. Every woman deserves the chance to realize her God-given potential.” (Clinton, 1995) She also says that we must face the facts that women will never gain their full dignity until human rights are respected and protected. Hillary says the point and main focus on this conference is to give families strength and to empower women to take control over their own destinies and for the government to recognize these rights that women and humans have in their societies. In closing her speech she says that if we take steps to better the lives of women everywhere it will pay off only if we do not discriminate and realize the full potential we as humans have. “Let this conference be our-and the worlds- call to action” (Clinton, 1995) Once we all can recognize these setbacks and begin to give respect and dignity to women only then we can have a strong and stable future.
In conclusion, Clinton collectively uses ethos, pathos, and logos to persuade the audience that women’s rights are human’s rights. We are all created equal and that should be recognized in every part of the world. Hillary Clinton is an extraordinary woman and I am honored to have her speak on behalf of all women everywhere and use her voice and power to make our voices heard.
