Some people believe that only students with best academic should be reward, some other people think it is more important to reward students with improvement. Discuss& Give your opinion.
Rewarding top students with excellent grades is widely believed as an effective way to set examples for others to follow on campus. However, from my perspective, rewarding students with great progress greatly contributes to students’ constant efforts and positive values.
It is undeniable that rewarding academically successful students motivates others to pursue excellence. Since excellence is regarded as the only standard to judge and award a student, the majority will set goals of reaching perfection in their test performance. Thus, in order to fulfill such goals, students will make great efforts in daily study. Besides, those who have already been excellent will work harder in order to keep their achievement.
However, rewarding students with improvement encourages them to persist in their effort. Unlike the traditional awarding strategy which ignores most individuals, students’ every forward step pays off. Thus, they will have more confidence and motivation to improve their study skill and master more knowledge. Besides, such persistence in study enables students to form their study habits such as time management due to long-term practice.
Moreover, those who are rewarded for progress will establish proper values. Unlike the widespread awarding way, which makes decisions just according to the result, recognizing improved ones advocates hard work. Due to giving prizes for progress, students do not need to pay much attention to the final consequence. Thus, they will not seek excellence in illegitimate ways such as cheating in the exam and copying homework.
Although some benefits deriving from the conventional rewarding standard such as setting examples, recognizing improved individuals make contributions to persistence and positive values. Therefore, schools should pay more attention on the average students.
