According to the National Association of Social Workers, Clinical Social Workers are part of the largest portion of mental health care in the United States. Social workers focus on case studies over a certain period of time, but don’t grasp the lengthy biological basic training and research methods. They offer assessments, diagnosis, and psychotherapy to individuals, couples, families and groups. Clinical psychology is somewhat like counseling psychology specifically when it comes to the training. Counselors deal more with guiding and advising, while clinical psychologists deal with interferences in mental health and take on more of experimental and scientific approaches where treatment is concerned. Psychologists have a different outlook when treating patients, and will focus more on behavior and cognition than social workers do.

Also, psychologists work in many various types of settings such as private practices, schools, mental health clinics, hospitals, and community centers. Psychologists can also choose specialized areas such as industrial/organizational psychology, sports psychology or health psychology. There will be psychological problems that are going to be more common and most people think, and others that are rare. If working with patients as a counselor, the psychologist needs to know which conditions are most likely to happen with their patient. While unusual problems will still occur, examining more common problems first helps the doctor diagnose problems faster. If the diagnosis is unclear, psychologists may need to rely on statistics to decide which problem is most likely affecting the patient. These clinicians will need to keep up with the changes in literature because new statistical information is always coming to the surface.

Though mental illnesses have existed throughout the world, and can be dated back to the dark ages with theories that were known to be quite exaggerated, there are many regards to modern research and science. The recent advances and the development of psychology have luckily evolved and more understood, and it continues to thrive in this field of psychology. Being able to comprehend, assess, and recognize the human mind and behavior, has allowed a psychologist to be able to diagnose and form specific treatment plans for individuals. The field of clinical psychology will continue to develop and advance, and with the help of research and statistics will determine stability surrounding the different treatments and assessments. Psychologists are more prepared nowadays thanks to managing their research that was created to find the main components that makes certain therapy approaches more effective than others. Furthermore, psychology will continue to develop better approaches depending on any latest research or statistics findings and therefore allowing them to continue to provide valuable services.
