by destroying Japan, which was considered very powerful as it had captured a lot of East Asia, all the way down to Australia. This act was somewhat threatening USSR (Russia).
One more reason would be that America wanted to test their new weapon. Source 15, written by Henry Stimson in 1946 suggests this “A demonstration in an uninhabited area was not regarded as likely to make Japan surrender. There was the danger of the test being a dud. Also, we had no bombs to waste.” It is expected that America would want to use their new weapon. The bomb had, after all, been developed at a cost of $2000 Million. It would be difficult to justify not using it after such a vast financial investment. Two types of bombs had been created. Nagasaki, according to the booklet for Nuclear Disarmament in 1985, was an experiment. Therefore, if America has already created their weapon, they want to test it out on Japan, not only resulting to the results of the test but also helping them win the war. The first bomb, dropped on Hiroshima was called “Little boy”. The second one dropped on Nagasaki, which ran as an experiment was called “Fat man”
But to object to the last reason, America did not have to drop the bomb on Japan to win the war. According to Sources 11 and 18 where it is explained that America could still have won the war without using the bomb, since Japan’s food and weapon supply would run out, ultimately making America win the war, even if they didn’t use the bomb. Or the demonstration of the bomb could be made on barren land, and Japan could be asked after to surrender. But ignoring the last points, according to Source 20, Japan was already seeking peace before the first bomb was dropped, according to documents leaked to the US Press. So, even though Japan surrendered before the bomb was dropped, America still decided to destroy Japan.
In conclusion, the United States ultimate decision to release the atomic bombs on Japan was definitely justified as they were thinking of the better result. In other words, what result had the least damage and least cost. A conventional war against Japan that would result in millions of casualties is surely more dreadful than the nuclear bomb that had much less casualties.
Truman’s original choice to drop the atomic bomb was justified, however dropping the second one was not right. Before Little Boy, the US gave a warning to Japan that an attack was eminent and it warned the Japanese government to surrender. But in the Fat Man bombing, it was dropped just a few days later. Japan had no time to react to the drop to see if they should accept defeat or not. The US should have given more time for Japan to find out if they are going to surrender or not. If they had given more time, the result would have perhaps been much less devastating.
