Antitrust laws are important to the economy, businesses both big and small, and consumers. “And, if the antitrust enforcers closed shop, I have little doubt that the competitive structure of our economy would erode significantly -- mergers and other agreements to achieve market power would occur in a heartbeat; and market power that had been legitimately achieved, through the development of intellectual property, for example, quickly would be used to extend or protect a monopoly position” (Klein). For any business to be successful and consumers to continue get products are reasonable prices, antitrust laws need to remain kept into place and enforced, without them, there is no one there to regulate and keep businesses from monopolizing and ultimately hurting consumers. Major corporations could simply shut down their competition through buyouts and mergers in order to maintain their power, crush any competition and essentially rule their industry completely. Antitrust laws prevent such things from happening. Otherwise, many businesses would have already achieved such or be very close to the achievement of monopolization.
