Although many countries permit to carry guns and have a lot of guns, it is possible to reduce gun incidents through strict gun control laws such as Switzerland and Australia. They all run license system to buy and carry guns and additionally discarded a lot of firearms. They not only have strong gun cultures, but also have pioneer spirits like the U.S. However, they enforced gun control laws to reduce gun incidents and save people’s life in spite of so much opposition. There were also a lot of efforts that would make gun control laws after gun incidents in the U.S. Although some people agreed about gun control, it was not easy to make gun control laws because of opponents of those. As a result, if we want to make gun control laws for the public security, it is recommended to have knowledge of the debate on gun control.

The Debate on Gun Control

There have been two kind opinions about gun issue that gun possession is the basic right to protect oneself according to the Constitution or not in the U.S. Gun possession was respected as the basic right in the U.S. As a result, although there are many victims due to gun incidents, it is not easy to make gun control laws in the U.S. However, there is no time to delay any more because there are a lot of tragic gun incidents and victims including young students. In order to keep our public security and save innocent lives from firearms, there should be stricter gun control laws. Alters (2007) stated that 51% of Americans advocated stricter gun control laws according to a Gallup poll conducted in 2006 and 11% of African-American, 10% of Hispanic, and 4% of white students feel unsafe at school or on the way to or from school according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics report. After considerable sacrifices from gun incidents, many Americans think that there should be stricter gun control laws despite oppositions. In addition, many students feel unsafe even at school. Although opponents of gun control argue that gun possession is the basic right by long customs and the Constitution, gun control laws are necessary to reduce many victims for a safer society.

The gun issue has long been debated because the U.S. has a strong gun culture. Although there are strong opposites about the gun issue, we couldn’t delay any stricter gun control laws to reduce many victims. After the Federal Government Regulation of Guns in 1927, there were important laws to control firearms. The Gun Control Act of 1968 demanded to remain records of all gun sales, license and banned non-sporting guns’ importation, sales to minors or ex-convicts, and the interstate mail-order sale of long guns. The Gun-Free School Zones Act of 1990 banned possessing firearms in designated school. The Brady Law should wait for a national five-day to buy a gun for background checks. There are many countries to permit gun possession beside the U.S. Some countries strictly control firearms to reduce gun incidents such as the Switzerland and Australia. Those countries demand gun license to possess guns and additionally discarded a lot of firearms. There have been furious arguments between supporters and opponents of gun control laws in the U.S. Although gun possession is a basic right according to the Constitution, gun control laws are necessary to reduce gun incidents and build a secure society for our next generation.
