The delusion of endless growth is another point that Judt nails as one of the fundamental problems with the way we live today. Those in power have pushed their agendas for over three decades and there is little opportunity to change this unless the shift of mindset becomes widespread. The rich have projected unto mainstream society that the growth and abundance of materialistic items are necessary for happiness. However, Judt points to a focus instead on the collective improvement of all lives today. People are told what to think and are made to feel inadequate by those in power, and by having people believe that change is possible, Judt argues that we can reverse the damage of the past three decades. “We need to re-open a different sort of conversation. We need to become confident once again in our own instincts” (pg. 173).
Judt brings incredible perspective to history and the repruccisions of the past. Today, many individuals feel oppressed, frustrated, and ready for some kind of change. There is no possible way to know how much of Judt’s speculation is truly accurate, however it is safe to say that his philosophy is compelling and clearly well-thought. Reflecting on current events and society today, I am in full agreement with Judt. There needs to be more compassion and focus on others, and with more openness to communication with each other. There is always shifts in mindset throughout history, and while these are natural, I do believe that there has been a fundamental flaw in the way we have lived these past three decades. I hope that with the youth of today and the encouragement of knowledge, individuals come to their own conclusions about the welfare state and the rise of capitalism.
