Is It Ever Acceptable for Schools to Ban Books?

According the President of the American Literature Association, Carol Brey-Casiano, “not every book is right for every person.” Therefore, “by providing a wide range of reading choices for learning, exploration, and imagination students will gain the ability to read, speak, and think, freely.” (Bilyea). Living in America is a great gift not everybody receives. The freedom of speech and expression Americans have is a benefit we have. Nat Hentoff argues “that keeping the book out of classrooms shortchanges students” (Bilyea). Children need to learn more about books and have the right to read what they want. Schools should not be able to ban books because of language kids know already. School is a great place because it discourages kids to use abusive language and all students have adults they can trust. Banned books teach about life lessons and cultural education not found in other books and therefore books shouldn’t be banned in schools but supported and inspiring.
In conclusion, schools should not be allowed to ban certain books from the curriculum because books offer diversity in ideas, thoughts, and culture. They also teach students more about cultural education and contain powerful lessons that must be taught. Banning books is unfair to students and takes away opportunities to learn. With the growth of new technology and ideas, books need to be protected and the ideal instilled in the books but preserved. They add a opportunity for learning and shape a better future for student’s.
