The culture of the Civil War in America was different very different from the life in the antebellum years. Because of the substandard equipment and clothing to barely edible and usually insufficient rations, a soldier’s life was one of near constant depravation and hardship as the war dragged on. Playing instruments as well as singing was a way for many soldiers to distract themselves and it resulted in sad ballads and patriotic marches would become a musical legacy of the conflict. Photography allowed war images to be brought to the public in the North. In the South, the Civil War had a huge economic impact. Due to the increasingly effective Union blockade of the Atlantic Ocean, the South had difficulty keeping the Confederate economy afloat to finance the war effort. The North on the other hand had little trouble financing the war effort, since congress passed the Internal Revenue act of 1861. This act imposed a 3 percent tax on the annual incomes to help finance the war, and most Northerners agreed with this seeing that it was necessary for the war. During the reconstruction following the Civil War, the South had set up laws called “Black Codes” to restrict freed blacks’ activity and ensure their availability as a labor force, and also denied freed Blacks the right to vote. This ended up angering Northerners including those in congress, so then congress passed the Civil Rights, but President Andrew Johnson vetoed it causing hi relationship with Congress to break, which lead to his impeachment.
