His second story had to do with love and loss. Jobs said, “I still loved what I did. The turn of events at Apple had not changed that one bit. I had been rejected, but I was still in love. And so I decided to start over” (Jobs 12). Jobs was finally fired from the company that he started at the the age of 30. He was given the opportunity to give everything up since he was let go or try harder to do what he loved. Steve Jobs did not give up, but started over and built up his second company, NeXT, even faster than Apple. This connects to the audience’s emotions because every one of those students wants to pursue a career that they are passionate about. The students know that they will have to eventually face obstacles that might slow them down and what to give up. Connecting to what Jobs had to go through provided the students hope that someday they will be able to push hard enough not let failure take them down.

His last story that he talked about was when a death impacted him and his encounter with death itself. This connected with pathos appeal because he spoke of his close experience with death. “Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life's change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you…” (Jobs 22). Mentioning that the new is you, using your time everyday to make something of yourself because eventually we wont have any time left. He stated that death is the single destination that everyone on earth has in common. People fear death because it is the end and people are scared of what till come after it their time on earth. This is why he encouraged people to live everyday as if it was their last day, to be content with what you are doing.

Steve Jobs died October 5th, 2011 at the age of 56. He died six years after he gave the speech. A third of his speech talks about death and how eventually we will all be gone. Jobs describes a bit about his terminal illness and how he was only given six months to live, but he fought hard and lived many years after he was diagnosed. Is this what makes his speech and legacy so famous? His death connects the speech to ethos and pathos, If Jobs would not have died in 2011, there is much to say that his commencement speech would not get as much of an impact on readers today.

Steve Jobs left a legacy people will always remember his driven attitude to create something that so many people use in their daily lives, Steve jobs created a legacy for always being driven and although something like apple exist today doesn’t mean that you should strive to make the next big thing, to do what you love the most. The main theme that ties his entire speech together is to never give up on yourself and strive something you care so much about. The use of appeals used to connect to the audience causes high support for his vision. Giving up should never be an option to someone who cares about it so deeply, knowing that something could stop you from doing it should only fuel your drive to overcome that obstacle.
