Education Essay

According to an unknown author “Life's important lessons are not learned in school.” The prompt claims that people do not learn life's most important lessons while they are in school. I partially agree with the author's quote because many lessons are learned in school but not all.

Luis Rodriguez, the author of Always Running , learns some important lessons while in school. At one point in the story, Luis’ counselor basically tells him that he does not fit in with other classes. The character states, “ I think you'll find out industrial arts subjects more suited to your needs” Luis Rodriguez p.19. First this reason he feels put down and does not feel encouraged to try more challenging courses to try more challenging courses. Later Luis stores not even continue going to that school because of the way they make him feel. Similarly, “ I didn't last long in Taft High School. My only real friend was Edwin, a black dude who lived at the Pacific Boys Home. During lunch we would “work” the neighborhood:breaking into nearby fancy houses.” Luis Rodriguez p.20. If I were Luis at this point I would not be”working” the neighborhood, but trying to prove my counselor wrong. In conclusion,Luis learns that people will judge him for where he's been or comes from.

In other words, his master wanted Douglass to have no chance of being educated. From time to time, Frederick found other ways to learn new things. “With their kindly aid, obtained at different times and in different places, I finally succeeded in learning to read.” F.D. p.23. This quote reminds me of myself because I also learned to understand many words by the help of others outside of school. In the end, Frederick did not have to attend school in order to learn how to read.

Unlike Frederick, I learned most of my lessons inside of school. Earlier in my life I did not speak, read, or write in English. I learned how to speak, read, and write in school. As a result I am now doing well on school and take regular classes with the majority of students at school. Another example of me learning lessons in school is learning to use the language regularly. I learned how to communicate more. Since all the kids at school would only speak to me in English, I practiced with them I got comfortable and communicated with new people. Overall , I
