He was a great contribution to both America and Europe. He belonged to a very famous art movement known as The Hudson River School. As I’ve said, his paintings aren’t usually limited, besides portraits he also exhibited works depicting historical events and religious themes which are very well appreciated in both America and Europe. Aside from being the president of the National Academy of Design twice, he also was a trustee and vice-president of the Metropolitan Museum of Art from 1870 to 1903.
He was widely known during his time with many popular paintings such as: “The Florentine Girl”, “Early Christian Prisoners”, "The Shepherd Boy of the Campagna", "The Roman Penitents", "Christiana and Her Children", "Queen Mary signing the Death-Warrant of Lady Jane Grey", etc. but most of his work has faded in memory as time pass. Many people, today, thought of his paintings as lifeless and conservative or some seems to be too romantic but some still remains to strike a balance with the contemporary. He is thought to be a thoughtful, quiet painter, and a sincere, unassuming man. If I was to be friends with him, I think would get along quite well with each other and I’m just so interested in his normal lives and what I’ve learnt so far is not enough.
