The following equation is used for determining how much work should have been completed and is delineated by the status. If the task is complete then this is equal to actual work. If the task is on schedule, then the number of days the task has been active divided by the duration and multiplied by the work is calculated to determine how much work should have been accomplished. The derivation of the equation discounts future work. If the task is not complete and the task’s finish date is prior to the status date, then this is equal to the planned work. If the task is not complete and the task’s finish date is after the status date, the same calculation for when the task is on schedule is performed.

If Status is Complete then

Expected_Completed_Work = Actual_Work

else if Status is On Schedule then

Expected_Completed_Work = (Status_Date - Start_Date) / Duration * Work

else if Status is Future then

Expected_Completed_Work = 0

else if Finish_Date is before Status_Date and not Complete then

Expected_Completed_Work = Planned_Work

else if Finish Date is after Status Date and not Complete then

Expected_Completed_Work = (Status_Date - Start_Date) / Duration * Work

The next equation is how much work should be remaining.

Expected_Remaining_Work = Work – Expected_Completed_Work

The last equation is if there is remaining work, then the difference between how much work should have been accomplished and how much work was actually accomplished.

If Remaining_Work then

Work_Lag = Expected_Completed_Work – Actual_Work

The schedule example below uses these equations with the Status Date of 08/02/2016. Summarizing, the overall the project is ~798 hours behind schedule equating to 5.43 person-months behind schedule. This is based upon 7.0 hours per day and 21 days per month equating to 147 hours/month for resource work. Note that Task B work delta is -15.11 hours which signifies that specific task is ahead of schedule.
