get an award, what is the impetus for improvement? Why bother learning problem-solving skills, when there are never obstacles to begin with?” (Merryman). This is what these “fake” awards do to our children. They cause kids to not understand disappointment, so they can be prepared for it in the real world. There are many solutions to these issues though.
There are many ways to fix this problem. For the parents out there what you can do to help is: if a sports league gives trophies out to everyone then find another league. For you commissioners of the local sports leagues what you can do to help is: Stop giving out participation trophies and awards, just to the champion and possibly runner up. This will help kids learn valuable life lessons about losing and how it builds character. This will not only help in sports, but also in school and everyday life. With your help we can create a generation of hardworking individuals that will one day run this country.
Although some say everyone should win, that is false. When everyone wins no one does. Losing does not feel good, but it is the only way kids will develop a thirst to win, on and off the field. My lacrosse coach once said “You will not succeed in life until you refuse to lose”, this is what inspired me to write this speech and share it with you. To many kids today are okay with losing and mediocrity, and it needs to stop, TODAY. With your help we can make it happen.
Thank you.
