When we go back in time to observe the beginning of the School-to-prison phenomenon, it was not a sudden law or policy that was passed by legislators or school officials at a certain time; it is the sum result of policies, laws and other factors practiced by schools-such as the zero-tolerance policy and even bullying- are accountable for the rise of this phenomenon. Zero-tolerance policies have proven to be effective in keeping schools safe, especially in areas where violence is a major problem, but these policies have come to mean district wide policies to mandate harsh and pre-determined punishments for a wide variety of offenses-even for the simple ones. Not only does it mandate unreasonable punishments it could also be taken as a reason for the breeding of more serious behavioral problems.

We shouldn’t be the reason why children won’t see a brighter future, we shouldn’t be the reason why this children couldn’t build their future, we shouldn’t have been the reason why those children are not living their future; indeed we should be the one building the blocks for them to step on and truly see what they are destined for.A great man once said, “He who opens a school door, closes a prison.” So I say we should destroy the school-to-prison pipeline, for the sake of humanity, and reroute a pipe that would connect them with their dream colleges, career ready programs, voluntary work programs and other resources that would benefit this little ones, their family, the community and the country's future. And I believe there are many other effective ways to correct the wrongdoings of the students. Perhaps allowing ourselves to imagine the possibilities-what could, should, and must be-is an indispensable first step for a better educational system in the US.
