These programs are enacted during the first weeks of the students being on campus to attempt to stop these actions early as well as give students knowledge of how to protect themselves if it were to occur. The students are given the opportunity to learn how to be resourceful and not helpless in cases of assault on campus.
Ivy league schools show a higher incident of rape and sexual assault, but these colleges work tirelessly to educate students and faculty about rape and sexual assault. Students on campus are encouraged to report counts of sexual assault that happen to them on campus. To further encourage their reports the school have implemented many programs and installed people that the victims can go and talk to confidentially. These schools also conduct confidential surveys of their population of acts that happen on campus. These surveys are conducted on a regular basis with other members of the University community, including members of the student community. The primary goal of these surveys is to identify areas of the campus that may present vulnerabilities to personal safety. By conducting these surveys, the college gains knowledge about the acts that are occurring on campus and can further implement safety precautions.
Overall these Universities have set out to be proactive in terms of assaults on campus. They have recognized the issue and found ways to combat these accounts of assault. By preparing programs for students to learn how to stay safe the schools have created a campus of awareness. These schools have also begun to create a safe environment for students to speak out against their abusers. Though they may have high reported rates of rapes and sexual assault this is merely due to students being able to comfortably report the activity on campus.
