The diversity of the American workforce today reflects the changing social issues of our society. Workplace diversity can be understood best by examining how characteristics of the different groups impact how they interact with each other. Existing prejudices in employees can be difficult to overcome and may lead to arguments or even violence. Companies with employees from different backgrounds may better understand a diverse group of customers. In addition, they may be able to adapt to business changes more readily given the range of perspectives among their employees. Research indicates that teams made up of people with diverse backgrounds, experience, and skills actually produce better than teams made up of like-minded and homogeneous employees (herring, 2009; Page, 2008) (Giraffe, V. 2011)

Working with people that come from culturally diverse backgrounds can sometimes present social challenges because of perceptions of ourselves and others and how that challenge affect ones behavior. One of the best keys to fight through the diversity is communication. Language barriers often occur in the event of jargons, which can fuel huge misunderstandings. Someone may feel the need to appear competent and cooperative, then some workers for whom English is a second language may think or indicate that they understand what they are told when actually they do not. This may occur particularly when terminology is unclear or peppered with unfamiliar cultural references. No matter what the situation may be, one must be able to communicate and be willing to be flexible when dealing with others. In todays’ society, we as a work force to be recon with must put aside gender, age, and race in order to come together and function as a workforce of one.
