Sexual Harassment on Sidewalk

Working on the sidewalk is the opportunity that is provides to communicate with pedestrians. Make nice conversation with them and make regular customers by treating them with respect. But vendors like Mudrick don’t care about it. Vendors like him don’t respect women, they look at women like they have a control over them. He wants to show and feel that he has power. He said ”No women is nice. All of them full of shit.” It shows us that he has a gender problem. He likes to hurt women feeling. He said “The things I say, they can’t accept. They gotta deal with it.” He doesn’t have a house, family and an opportunity in his life, so women will never pay attention to him. He doesn’t care what women would think about him, when he tries to talk with them in way that he likes. I imply that he treats them like that because there is also class difference. Most women are middle and upper class who have everything for good and happy life. Pedestrians women wear nice cloth, which probably cost a lot, and they also look very neat and nice. I imply that they also have a nice apartment, good car and well-paid job. What about vendors? They have nothing and there is no perspective in their lives.

In my own experience I can say that magazine vendors act in very bad way and they have to be sanction for that. They can’t just harass women on the street. Yes, it’s public space, but as Mitch Duneier said “A good street life consist in part of the freedom to walk along without getting entangled, and to feel safe while doing so.” In my country, Uzbekistan, all men treat women with respect and talk with them in nice way, especially with women who they don’t know. You can’t just say something to women without think about it first, will your words hurt women feelings or won’t. Every man also knows that they have to be very carefully when they talk with women, they might be sanction if they cross the line. For example, one day when I was doing shopping I saw situation with sexually harass women. One man near me was talking with good dressed woman next to him. He wore old dirty jeans and obes4vechenyu shirt. Women had nice purfume, but that man smelled spesific. First he was nice with her, but after couple of minutes he started to talk with her in a rude way. She didn't pay attention on him. She was nervous and afraid of this man. Then another man who heard that the man talked with women in with no respect. He came to him and said don’t talk with her like that. Man answer, she should hear what I told her and pay attention to me, after he said to the women I want to go to bed with you, then the other man punished him in the face. Then he said you have to respect women and after that they will respect you. He also said, you have no rights to hurt women even with words.

As we can see most vendors are people who tries to survive. And most of them trying to do their best. But they all have to know that they can’t just talk with people especially with women in a rude way without any respect. If they don’t want to be sanction for that. If they they want to get respect from people they have to treat them with respect first. Do what you want to do, say what you want to say, but don’t cross the line. If you want to have power, you have to achieve very good social status and become successful person. Don’t discriminate people about their gender, class and race difference.
