Engaging personally with people from diverse populations and communities can increase knowledge on diverse population’s cultural needs. This will help counselors spread awareness and understanding of a diverse population’s strengths, cultural group memberships and personal experiences of discrimination (Betancourt, Green, Carrillo, 2003).A community strategy that can be used to advocate for diverse populations would be social advocacy. Social advocacy in counseling, according to Smith, Reynolds & Rovnak (2009), “entails interventions aimed at individual client needs as well as sociopolitical attempts to foster change in society” (p.483). Social advocacy is a tool that can give diverse populations and disadvantaged groups a voice and is based on understanding disconnections between service providers and service users. To advocate on an individual level empowerment would be a strategy to use with clients from diverse populations. Through empowerment individuals from diverse populations can be a voice for themselves. According to an article by Grothaus &McAuliffe (2012), individual’s from diverse populations “may have developed some of their strengths through the process of dealing with adversities inherent in occupying non dominant status in mainstream U.S. culture” (p.54).Through empowerment individuals can stand up for their culture and diffuse negative views and encourage the dominant culture to embrace their characteristics and their contributions to society.

Apply Strategies to Promote Client Understanding and Access to Community Resources

Council on American-Islamic Relations(http://www.cair.com/about-us/vision-mission-core-principles.html) is a community resources organization that according to their website challenges stereotypes of Islam and Muslims.Apply effective strategies to promote client understanding of and access to a variety of community resources. Provide a rationale for the strategies selected and describe the anticipated results.
