- Develop a SWOT analysis for the NCAA. Utilizing research in addition to the case, provide at least three examples of each element of the SWOT analysis.

I have decided to bring about my point through examples in order to make it easier to understand.

SWOT ANALYSIS OF NCAA

Strengths of NCAA

- Absolute market control: It is the only such organization that protects the interests of student athletes and looks for the betterment of their career in college. Therefore it has absolute power and control in the market as there is no other organization out there in competition. It has complete monopoly in the market.

- Television and Marketing rights: In 2012, the NCAA earned $708,860,595 in television and marketing rights fees. It’s most recent deals with CBS and ESPN would provide a buck load of money for the organization in form of fees. This goes to show that these rights provide the most funding to the organization.

- Brand name: Hundreds of college athletes have ended up becoming professional athletes only because of NCAA. This brings credit, goodwill and creates an international reputation which helps its own growth.

Weaknesses of NCAA

- Lack of Democratic form of Leadership:

Because of the volume of power the NCAA has, there have been instances when the organization has dictated terms and conditions that needed to be followed. Also, claims state that it involves itself into cases that don’t require top level management’s attention.

- NBA Draft-entry rule: The rule states that student athletes can enter the NBA draft after their freshmen year in college. This mostly means that the players step into the professional circuit even before the exhaustion of their eligibility.

- Current Lawsuits: Certain lawsuits such as Ed O’ Bannon’s lawsuit against student athletes achievements to mint extra funds, has definitely put the NCAA under the negative spotlight. Another is the Paterno family against the NCAA. Both these cases affect the goodwill of the organization.

Opportunities of NCAA:

- Increase the number of member institutions:

By increasing the number of member institutions, it would most definitely increase the revenue for NCAA through the membership dues.

- Television Contracts : its recent contract with ESPN and CBS( for 14 years) opens the NCAA’s doors to more marketing and networking for additional growth. It can use this opportunity to make more revenue by being demanding towards the providers in exchange of showcasing their games.

- Sponsoring various other sports championships:

By sponsoring various other sports championships, it gives more chances and opportunities to athletes pertaining to that sport and increased fan base therefore more growth!

Threats to NCAA

- Decrease in the quality of College Teams:

A never ending worry would be that if the quality of performance of the most popular sports teams drop, then the fans would end up gravitating towards professional level sport championships rather paying the much needed attention towards college athletics.

- National Athletic Intercollegiate Association(NAIA) Increases memberships: If the NAIA starts gaining more number of member institutions into their circle, then the NCAA would have competition and end up losing its revenue and market share.

- Threat of NAIA: If the NAIA slowly rises to fame, then the NCAA would not only lose its revenues and market share but also its priced possession- student athletes. They would start choosing NAIA over NCAA.

- Using leadership characteristics described in your textbook and additional research, cite specific behaviors the NCAA utilizes to maintain the support of its member institutions.

All throughout reading the main extract the one thing I realized was that the NCAA most highlighted form of leadership is Authoritative form of Leadership. Because the organization has its main goal towards incorporating education into the lives of student athletes along with providing a fair and safe platform while playing the sport. Because of this goal, the organization has mobilized its fellow member institutions to work towards achieving that goal and the main vision of integrating sports with education. I personally feel like this characteristic is the main quality that helps drive NCAA and its member institutions towards its goal and vision. In addition, it helps keep a close contact with its member institutions as by notifying them about the upcoming objectives/goals, they keep these institutions informed and in harmony.

Also, I strongly feel like the NCAA indulges in democratic form of leadership too. In order to keep all the member institutions in the loop, the organization must indulge in consensus through participation. There have been several instances when the organization has given preference to the member institutions’ opinions and their point of views. This goes to show that not only does the NCAA value the member institutions but also values their thoughts and opinions.

So with both Authoritative and Democratic forms of leadership, the NCAA has been able to not only keep its member institutions in sync with the recent happenings, but also taken their opinions and thoughts importance. This gives the member institutions a piece of a leadership role. Therefore through this strategy both the member institutions and the NCAA have been able to progress further towards reaching and accomplishing their goals and vision.

Abandon the NCAA model given that the economic landscape of college athletics has progressed beyond its ability to regulate and be seen as a desirable organization with which to be affiliated

Pros:-

- By abandoning the NCAA form of organization, not only does it give a chance for other smaller and individual organizations to take its place, but also gives the student athletes to venture out further into different aspects of other organizations and take a stand for themselves

- With the growing increase in the sports
