“stable set of perceptions you hold of yourself” (Adler, Rosenfeld, Proctor 66-67). In the past, my self-concept was not healthy, I did not have very high self esteem which played a factor in how I perceived myself.

In Interview #2, with my best friend, I found him to speak of me with pretty high regard. Without sounding like a narcissist, I would have to agree with his evaluations of me. This positive feedback that I receive from him on a daily basis positively improves my self esteem. Self esteem is the “part of the self-concept that involves evaluations of self worth” (Adler, Rosenfeld, Proctor 66-67). “Positive feedback provides them with a sense of healthy, balanced self esteem. These lessons thus teach and reinforce the foundation of healthy self-esteem is necessary for communication.” (Fostering Self-Esteem..).

In Interview #3, with an acquaintance, they said that, “You are always so positive that you will do well on tests” and “you seem very confident in what you say”. Because I have shown a positive self concept to the people I socialize with, “positive self evaluations can often be the starting point for positive communication with others” (Adler, Rosenfeld, Proctor 66-67) I am perceived in a positive way, making is easier to communicate with others.

Part 3

When interacting with the two interviewees, I found myself happy with how it turned out. I do believe that I have high self esteem and a healthy self-concept, therefor I am pleased that those qualities are perceived well by others. I am a hard working person and both of my interviewees perceived me to have that same quality. If I were to have done this interview a few years back when I had low self esteem and a false self-concept, the answers would have likely been different from all three interviewees. Now that I am looking back to a few years ago, I notice that I did not have as many friends and my all of my relationships struggled in the area of communication. Having a positive self-concept and high self esteem is important in all aspects of life, especially communication. How we perceive ourselves only sets the tone for how everyone else perceives us.
