El Santaurio De Chimayo

There are many stories told by elders regarding the miracles of El Santuario de Chimayo but the one that jumps out to me was told by my husband’s father Ralph Romero Sr. in a phone interview on April 16th, This story was told to him by his parents who were born and raised in Mora New Mexico. Mr. Romero Stated “My parents once told me a story about a special cross that was found by a man in Chimayo. He had saw a light and followed it, it led him to dig a whole where the light was coming from, and what he found was amazing. This man found the cross buried in the dirt, he went to tell others, one man was a priest I think, they dug the cross from the ground and took back to a church in Santa Cruz and placed it at the altar. The next morning the cross was gone. The men went back to the original place where it was found and there it was. They did this about 4 times and every time the cross would be missing the next morning. They believed that the spot in Chimayo where the cross was found was holy and wanted to be located there.” This story by my father-in-law seemed a little fishy to me so I looked it up and sure enough a few details different but basically the same.

The land of Chimayo proved to be holy in many ways. In 1813 residents of El Potrero asked for permission to build a chapel on the land and dedicate it to Our Lord of Esquipulas on what was believed to be a piece of earth with healing powers. This little church has brought hope to so many and continues to be a great miracle, Santuario to the people of New Mexico and around the world.
