Criminals using social media to commit and promote crimes. Children do not know what they are signing up for and giving information, for example if they want to sign up for games but in reality this is not signing up for a games, this criminals are hacking and taking information. As stated by wdsu.com, Police said, “Gangs use the sites to recruit younger members, coordinate violent crimes, and threaten other gangs. Offline crime, like home robberies, may result from posting personal information such as vacation plans or stalkers gaining information about a victim’s whereabouts from posts, photos, or location tagging service.” This is very dangerous, signing up for an account, children would not know if its a scam or not. Parents should be always be aware of the potential dangers.
Rick Floyd, security for Greenville Country schools and former member of the Greenville City Police Department said, "It's hard for a lot of parents today because they weren't raised on social media, so they don't understand how severe the danger is, most parents are afraid to have that dialogue, but children in third-, fourth- and fifth-grade are starting to sext and to become victims of cyberbullying. It's in elementary schools now. It's a very important topic for parents these days."
In conclusion, social media is both, good and bad. If children have access to social media. Well it depends on the parents if they should, even though they can get access without parents knowing. But parents should always have a very long and honest conversation with them before letting them go to social media. Parents should be very aware of what your kids is signing up, viewing, and posting, social media could be fun but it is very dangerous too.
