Due to this current situation, the researchers conducted a survey on the causes of smoking among Rizal High School students to better understand why some students smoke.

The researchers aimed to look for the effects or health risks regarding smoking aside from having a lung cancer. They are looking forward to help and cooperate with the school administrators, teachers, students, school guard and the utility workers. Finally, they aimed to discover how to deal with some students who smoke.

- SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The main purpose of the study is to find out the common causes and effects of smoking among Rizal High School students. This study is very productive and needs more time to work on because you will not able to know who the smokers among Rizal High School students are. The researchers should be knowledgeable enough to find and understand the answers why this happened. It is very necessary to know for Rizal High School because smoking is a huge problem in the school that needs to solve.

The result of this research can be beneficial in coming up with possible solution to the existing problems on smoking. Many can be going to benefit. First, the school administrators can be benefit to improve the current situation by developing and enforcing a school policy in tobacco use, support cessation efforts among the students and all the school staff who use tobacco and involve parents or families in support of school-based programs to prevent tobacco use.

- STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The researchers aim to find answers to the following questions:

- At what age did they start smoking?

- How many cigarette sticks do they smoke in a day?

- Who influenced them to smoke?

- Who do they smoke with?

- When do they usually smoke inside the campus?

- When do they smoke?

- Where do they hide their cigarette sticks when they enter the campus?

- What is smoking for them?

- How do they feel when they smoke?

- Do their parents know that they smoke?

- Have they ever been caught smoking?

- Do the teachers know that they smoke?

- What are the reasons why they smoke?

- Do they know the health risks involved in smoking?

- Have they tried to stop smoking?

- RESEARCH ASSUMPTIONS AND HYPOTHESES

The following are the assumptions and hypotheses of the researches on the study conducted:

- Rizal High School students who smoke started smoking at the age of 16 above.

- Rizal High School students who smoke can smoke 2-3 sticks of cigarettes in a day.

- Rizal High School students who smoke were influenced by their friends.

- Rizal High School students who smoke usually smoke with their friends.

- Rizal High School students, who smoke, smoke before they go home.

- Rizal High School students, who smoke, smoke in the Comfort Room.

- Rizal High School students who smoke hide their cigarettes in their wallet.

- Rizal High School students who smoke use smoking as their stress reliever.

- Rizal High School students who smoke feel relaxed whenever they smoke.

- Parents of Rizal High School students who smoke didn’t know that their son/daughter smoke.

- Rizal High School students who smoke has been caught smoking inside the campus.

- Teachers of Rizal High School students who smoke didn’t know that their student smoke.

- Rizal High School students, who smoke, smoke just for fun and entertainment.

- Rizal High School students who smoke know the health risks involve in smoking.

- Rizal High School students who smoke also tried to stop smoking.

CHAPTER 2

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY AND PROCEDURES

The Descriptive Method of research was used in this study. Descriptive Method of research is a fact finding study with adequate and accurate interpretation of the findings. It describe what is it describes with emphasis what actually exist such as current conditions, practice situation, or any phenomena. Since the present study or investigation was concerned with the causes of smoking among Rizal High School Students, the descriptive method of research was the most appropriate method to use.

The method of collecting data was the normative survey. This is concerned with looking into the commonality of some elements. Since the present research is a study, the normative survey was the most appropriate method to use in gathering data.

The instrument used to collect data was the questionnaire. This was used because it gathers data faster than any other method.

After reading from related studies, the researchers prepared their questionnaires. They saw to is that there were enough items to cover all the aspects of the problem and to answer all the specific questions under the statement of the problem. Then, they submitted the questionnaire to their research adviser for correction, after which it was finalized.

The researchers printed out 150 questionnaires and distributed them to 18 Grade 7 students, 24 Grade 8 students, 56 Grade 9 students and 52 Grade 10 students. They went room to room and asked the assistance of
