The most talked about reason against same-sex marriage is based on religion. Many people believe that procreation is the main reason for marriage. Their belief is that same-sex couples do not have the capability to bear a child. However, when two of the most influential religious icons discussed marriage, child bearing was not a reason for two people to get married. “It is highly significant that Jesus and Paul while both referring to the creation story, never once mention procreation or physical sexual difference in their teaching about marriage” (Sullivan, 1997). Both men stated that the quality of a relationship was the most important thing for marriage. If marriage is reserved for having a child, then same-sex marriages are not an issue. There are countless ways to have a child. Not all of them amount to doing the same thing. One of these ways is adoption. However, most adoption agencies will only release children to married couples, rejecting homosexual parents. By legalizing gay marriage in all states, adoption agencies would be forced to give respect and right to homosexual couples as they do to heterosexual couples. Same-sex marriage will increase the chances for billions of foster children waiting to be adopted by loving parents and families which would be a benefit for the nation’s society.
During a marriage ceremony, the church’s only role is to give its blessing. “The church does not, in fact, marry anyone. People marry each other. The state, not the church, defines the nature of legal marriage” (Sullivan, 1997). Sullivan (1997) also states how the church has blessed fields when crops have been planted, MX missiles, new houses, and warships whose main purpose is to kill and destroy. There is no reason the church should not bless a relationship in which two people vow to be faithful and love each other for eternity. The church says that blessing same-sex marriages is unholy well in fact they had blessed many other things that involves destruction. Religious views should have no place in federal, legal matters. We live in a secular society. The Ten Commandments do not define our legal system, so why does the religious statement “marriage is a union between a man and a woman” keep so many gay couples from becoming legally married? Legalizing gay marriage will have no negative impact on religion or the religious view of others, just as religion should not have an impact on the issue of gay marriage. Religious institutions can decline to marry gay and lesbian couples if they wish, but they should not dictate marriage laws for society. Tell the LGBT people again how their marriage is affecting you? The legalization of same sex marriage does not harm other heterosexual marriages nor will it cause the downfall of society. The fact that it has been allowed in half the states in the U.S. and yet the apocalypse has not arrived stands witness to this. The fact that gay couples can get married and celebrate their love will not affect what you do in your marriage.
- Conclusion
The debate over same-sex marriage will forever rage until it becomes legal. Same-sex relationships have been a part of history since the ancient times. Not allowing same-sex marriage is discrimination. Marriage should be between a spouse and a spouse not gender and a gender. Couples are denied financial benefits heterosexual couples receive. Same-sex marriage should be legalized so couples will have the right to make decisions regarding their partner’s health and medical treatment as well as allowing them to adopt foster children, which would be a very big help for the society. Since religious reasons are the most common reason for people being against same-sex marriage, designing the bill in a certain way will enable the church to stay uninvolved.
Marriage is not a privilege it is a right, a right for everyone to be equal. One of an example of a privilege is the church not paying taxes. Everyone in this world was created equal, therefore we should live equally. Denying the LGBT the right to be married is savage. Marriage is a basic human right for every individual in every country setting aside the religious belief of the faithful ones. Same sex marriage should be legalized in every nation, since our research sees no harmful effect on it in our society It will create equality for all people in a relationship and defeat the injustice behind same-sex couples.
