The family wished for 200 pounds. However, nothing happened till Herbert got caught by a machine in the workplace and died. 200 pounds was given by a man who seemed ill at ease for compensation.
Herbert’s death was devastating for the family as he is the only child and breadwinner. “It was my fault to get the monkey’s paw back from fire! I feel extremely guilty!” Mr. White confessed in remorseful voice.
Later, on a sorrowful night after the funeral, Mrs. White occasionally think of the magic paw and compelled her husband to wish Herbert back to life. Reluctantly, Mr. White breathlessly did so. Soon, there was a booming knock at the door. Mrs. White told the police hysterically, in a grieved voice, “when I opened that clumsy old door laboriously, the only picture in front of me was the street lamp flickering opposite shone on a quiet and deserted road. “
Villagers doubted the power of the monkey’s paw since the second wish did not work. All the villagers directed the spearhead at the old man, while Mr. White kept silence and refused to answer any of the queries.
This tragedy has spread immediately to the entire Haze town. A lot of villagers are guessing what Mr. White made for his third wish. However, no one knows. Villagers keep various attitudes toward the whole incidents. Some get scared while others say this is a merciless fate.
During the interview, one of the villagers Mr. Cofer remarked “This is totally about fate. The magic seems nonsense to me. This merciless death is all about unfortunate coincidence. Herbert is doomed to die. The law has stated that the compensation is 200 pounds. Everything comes with a price. Otherwise, how can Whites get this money? The monkey’s paw was ironic, don’t be superstitious.”
In response to this individual comment, another villager Ms. Judith argued “Magic is the entire clue. I have never heard such a coincidence in my life. That India magic paw took Herbert’s life away.”
Since the news has drawn bigger audiences, ‘magic or fate’ has become the hottest debate through the entire village. However, most people reflected: for everything there is a time for birth and a time for death, and be thankful for what you have because a covetous man is good to none but worse to himself.
