“That’s what im here for, to be interviewed to do that… as a volunteer (Walters 21)”
In the words of Ian we learn that he has showed up to the soup kitchen to be interviewed for his volunteer job. We can see that Ian is trying to help because he has actually showed up at the soup kitchen to try and contribute to his community. Ian has made a few new “friends” if you really want to call them that, some are Mac and Sarge.
My third and final reason why the novel Shattered is a novel that is based on helping others is because Mr. MacDonald also known as Mac, helps out Ian by providing him with a volunteer job got his high school civics class community service hours. Without Mac there would be no soup kitchen and all the street people would be hungry and have to eat out of dumpsters.
Mac has helped many people throughout this book. Without the job that Ian had received from Mac, Ian would not have passed his high school civics class and his dad would not have bought Ian a car. Mac has helped out thousands of street people that go to the soup kitchen. At least 100 people 3 times a day enter the soup kitchen to eat. That means that Mac in providing food for 2,100 people a week and 6,300 people in one month. Without the donations of food that restaurants donate it would not be possible.
“Best way to gain their trust and that’s the best way to help them. Nobody accepts help from somebody they don’t trust (Walters 69)”
In the words of Mac we learn that you have to gain anybody’s trust before you can help them. The reason that Mac is walking the streets at night and handing out cigarettes is to gain their trust so he can later help them. Mac has set a good example for Ian because Ian has followed Mac’s example and Ian has gave Sarge a package of cigarettes to gain his trust so that Ian can help him.
Thus, with all my three reasons why I believe why the novel Shattered is about helping others. I can prove that this novel is about helping others because Jack helping people all around the world during his Peacekeeping missions, Ian helping out Sarge; and the soup kitchen, and Mac helping out my giving Ian a volunteer job and by giving all the street people somewhere to eat every day.
