- Cost-cutting measures of companies for relevant training programs – Not all employers allot the required time or budget for training new hires, who are therefore expected to be fast-learners as they go completely hands on as early as day one
Training of employees takes place after orientation takes place. Training is the process of enhancing the skills, capabilities and knowledge of employees for doing a particular job. Training process moulds the thinking of employees and leads to quality performance of employees. It is continuous and never ending in nature. Training is a huge need of every company. Training is crucial for organizational development and success. It is fruitful to both employers and employees of an organization. An employee will become more efficient and productive if he is trained well. If an employee won’t be trained, it could lead to unproductivity and poor performance due to unknowledgeability.
Companies do cost-cutting for training programs to save and avoid financial cash-outs, but it is a huge factor that adds to the rate of underemployment or being job mismatched.
- Using connections in the workplace – There are applicants and employees who consider their relationship with a top-rank person in the organization as an assurance of securing jobs, while those who are more deserving end up unemployed or victims of career mismatches themselves
Referrals, connections, or we call it in Filipino “Kapit or Hatak”, is a true happening or another culture that Filipinos have. Using connections is a habit or culture of Filipinos, wherein placing individuals on a job due to mutual and personal relations. It is being done because there is this thing called owe.
Filipinos are helpful, if there are ways and if you have ways to make the people around you live their lives easy, then Filipinos will do it, and in return, the newly-hired friend or relative (could be a mayor’s Godson or Goddaughter), will owe his Godfather or Godmother one, and in return, he will do his job in a rightful and desired way for his Godmother/father not feel embarrassed with his decision. But with this case, it makes people job mismatched. They are being placed to positions they aren’t really fitted to and not knowledgeable of the job they have that could actually lead and contribute to the unproductivity rate of the firm or organization he is into.
C.
These are the factors contributes for the job mismatch to happen and will result to underemployment. Why underemployment must be resolved, or in a lighter way, be lessened? If underemployment continues, workers lose the ability to update their skills with on-the-job training. They may not be able to return to their former field without training. Some retrain for different fields, while other downscale their lifestyle and accept long-term underemployment.
Younger people may find they never get a good start to their career. Forced to take jobs that are beneath their skills, they don't get on the right career track. They miss the mentoring needed to get increased responsibility that would update their skills. By the time the recession ends, they are competing with a new batch of graduates for entry-level positions in their fields.
The disadvantages of underemployment aren’t too different from being unemployed. People seem to lose motivation in their career path and are set back from advancing, potentially for a few years. An even bigger and distinct disadvantage is not having the time to look for employment because of current job obligations. The recession produced layoffs and a selective job market, leaving many qualified professionals settling for jobs that don’t utilize hard skills and their degree at large. Those baristas with MBAs, those waiters with biochemistry degrees, and those receptionists who went to nursing school are just as unable to find and land the job that's a fit for them. It includes people working part-time who would like full-time employment, and people working at lower-level jobs than what they are qualified for, or earning less than they should be, due to the lack of available jobs.
II. Counter Argument
When we talk about Job Mismatch, its result is actually being underemployed, and if you will ask Filipinos, being underemployed isn’t big deal. Having a job is truly a source of income that helps you to earn a living and provide for your family that makes or opposes the Job Mismatch. Filipino will rather choose being underemployed than being unemployed. There are factors of being unemployed
Considering Unemployment, it affects your finances, lifestyle, and mindset and career aspirations, often leaving you confused about what the future may hold. And these factors are the reasons why there is Job Mismatch that results to Underemployment. Here as follows:
B. Provide supporting information for counterclaims
Financial Factor
Financial distress is often one of the biggest disadvantages of unemployment, even if you’re out of work for only a short time. Although unemployment benefits or a severance package might soften the blow, neither is a long-term solution. In addition, you’ll still be responsible for paying income tax and child support obligations from these amounts. On the other hand, a financial crisis forces most people to look at monthly spending more closely and from a perspective of buying what's really needed rather than merely wanted. In this factor, is better to be underemployed rather than being unemployed not having income and just waiting for nothing. Financial Crisis in the Philippines is severe that obviously affects the countrymen, and with that factor, Filipinos are really in need for money, and to earn money, you got to look for a job that could provide income. It is such a need considering the Philippines has this crisis, that there must be a stable job and stable income. In this time, it is not good to be picky for job, or to demanding. Practically speaking, you should look and find ways to earn a living.
Lifestyle
Lifestyle changes that often accompany unemployment are severe for some people and not easy for most. Disrupted daily routines, fewer social interactions and being out of the loop are common disadvantages. In addition, unemployment often requires that you cut back or eliminate activities such as weekend trips, nights out and hobbies. And this factor urges individual to go and find for work just to maintain or continue the routine he is usually doing, to avoid embarrassment due to personal and social pressure.
