Battle of Gettysburg, so it is set in Gettysburg, PA around the early 1860’s. The town is
important in the battles because the terrain is situated so that whoever had control of the hills
is at an extreme advantage. This plays a large role in the Northern victory, because they have
control of the hills. There isn’t much of a moral advantage for the North despite being on their
own ground in Pennsylvania, so this isn’t much of a factor for their army. However, the terrain
definitely favors the North because they are able to be successful with their conservative style
because a hill is very easy to defend.
Enemies have more in common than they believe they do. The north and south actually
have a lot in common in this book, they share extremely different views on slavery, but they
both share the same positive qualities. Both fight with honor and courage against all odds, and
both show respect for their enemy. “All right now, boys, for your wives, your sweethearts, for
Virginia! At route step, forward, ho” (Shaara 343)! This quote truly defines the Confederates
attitude toward their home land with pride even considering land as family. “That’s all we want
and that’s what this war is about. We established this country in the first place with strong state
governments just for that reason, to avoid a central tyranny—”(Shaara 70) The way the word
“we” as included in this statement almost formed a bond with the enemy reminiscing for what
and who this country was truly formed for.
Overall I truly enjoyed reading this novel for it bring forth reminder of our passed that
should never be repeated. I grained a better understanding of the learning multiple
perspectives can be helpful to resolve conflicts. This novel definitely teaches one lessons of the
pass as one would expect to be quite vague, but this novel explains it all with a can wait feeling
with every page turn.
