6. Netflix struck a deal with CBS to premiere the new Star Trek original series in 188 countries. Why is this deal unique? Why do you think CBS made the deal when it created the content for CBS All Access?
Netflix will make the new Star Trek available to stream in 188 countries, while fans in the U.S. and Canada will have to subscribe to CBS’ streaming service, CBS All Access, which costs $5.99 per month. Netflix users overseas will have access to new episodes of the series 24 hours after they each premiere in the U.S. Meanwhile, before the end of this year, Netflix will also start streaming every one of the more than 700 existing TV episodes from the Star Trek franchise’s previous series, from Star Trek: The Original Series to Star Trek: Enterprise.
Star Trek in 2016 celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first original debuted (1966), being one of the most famous and followed show in history of television with fans worldwide. The deal is very important for both companies, for Netflix this the opportunity to advertise itself in new markets with an iconic show such as Star Trek. Meanwhile CBS benefits from Netflix global reach and at the same time expand streaming subscription service domestically.
