coating to cover up the harsh realities of business. It is an illusion by estimating that it will be beneficial by being ethical. However in reality this not an ethical position at all. When one says that it is beneficial to be ethical what the person really means is that in the long run a company can generate more cash and profits if it operates its businesses abiding the law and does not squeeze all stakeholders of the business and competitors. Carr is trying to say that businesses actually try to be ethical for profits and not for the purpose of ethics.
Playing to win
Carr mentions that in order to be winner one must play to win. And in order to achieve that sacrifices have to be made whether or not they are ethical. That does not mean one has to be ruthless however once in a while there are certain scenarios which appear in front of people which if not taken advantage of will not enable one to truly win and distinguish themselves from others even if it requires to be perform unethical practices.
I was skeptical in the beginning but after some research on human psychology and corporate behavior I do agree with Carr. I do not agree with all of what Carr mentions but I agree with most of Carr and it is happening today our economy in front of our eyes. Various examples can be found just by turning on the news or browsing the internet.
I believe bluffing passes Hooker’s generalization test in poker due to the fact that in poker everyone is bluffing. Bluffing is what gives every player a competitive advantage over another.
However Hookers generalization test in business is a different story. I think these days it cannot be generalized that businesses are bluffing. This is due to the fact that government regulations are more strict and there are many non-profit organizations out there who make sure corporations are not abusing their positing in the market or practicing unethical ways operating business. There are many businesses in the globe that actually give a do a lot for the environment and add a lot of value to society. In some cases private businesses have helped the society more than governments therefore I do not believe bluffing passes the generalization test in businesses. However it is also true that many corporations are actually bluffing but it cannot be generalized because the good corporations in today’s day and age far outnumber the bad ones.
