General Information for Industry Supervisors and Students

The evaluation process begins with the students ranking their own performance and providing supporting evidence to justify their claims. This evidence should be drawn from entries recorded in their daily reflective journal/diary. Your task is to review the student’s self-evaluation and to decide whether you agree or disagree with their summary based on your expectations of a graduate trainee. Whether you agree or disagree, it is important that you provide meaningful feedback that will assist the student to focus their attention on issues and opportunities for improvement.

Additional Criteria is added to the End of Placement Evaluation

University and Faculty Learning objectives have been added to your final evaluation forms to provide additional information relevant to your degree program. Responses are optional.

Supervision visit

(There is only one visit approximately half way through the placement, around day 15)

Students are required to organise the visit and coordinate the day and time with their organisational/company supervisor and their Monash Academic coordinators (Ian Walker and Ross Booth). This visit is the supervisor’s and student’s opportunity to provide feedback on the student’s progress and to address any issues or concerns about the IBL program.

As the academic supervisor visit to the student’s placement organisation is a core aspect of this program students who fail to organise a visit will have the evaluation marks reduced.

Presentations

(Students must be available to make their presentation on the allocated day and time as detailed on the presentations timetable)

One of the key assessment tasks IBL students must complete is an oral presentation to their academic supervisor, other IBL students, and to relevant Monash staff that captures the essence of their IBL experience.

A timetable for the oral presentations will be arranged by the Industry Placements Officer and emailed to you. Each student is required to attend and be an active audience member during question time of other students’ oral presentation that are in the same session timeslot.

Oral presentations will be held at the following times:

Semester 1 Week 12

Semester 2 Week 12

Summer Semesters A & B “O” Week (the week before semester 1 commences)

Supervisors will receive an invitation to their student’s oral presentation and they are more than welcome to invite other representatives of their organisation. These presentations are a good way for you to network with Monash University faculty staff and for you to also see how much your IBL student has learnt and grown during their placement.

Student Code of Behaviour

1. INTRODUCTION: This document addresses issues of student conduct and conditions attached to the provision of training in sponsor organisations. It is not possible to cover all matters explicitly, therefore it is essential that you, the student, adopt the promotion of the interests of the Industry Based Learning program, the sponsors, and the university as your personal goals.

2. BUSINESS CULTURE: Business life is different from university life. There are likely to be more constraints and a more rigorous set of demands on your conduct. Actively seek out the actual and implicit rules of behaviour and comply with them. Always ensure that your supervisor knows where you are. Obtain agreement before you undertake any extra-ordinary activity or leave your normal environment.

3. ATTITUDE: You are an ambassador for the university, the Industry Based Learning program, and for the sponsor providing your training. It is within your power to bring credit or disfavour to those you represent. Act in a professional way at all times. Be punctual for meetings and in the delivery of your work. Respect company property and staff with whom you work. You are expected to be enthusiastic in whatever task you undertake, and to look for additional ways to contribute. Be part of the team.

4. DRESS: Dress codes vary across organisations and across sections of organisations. It is a requirement that you meet company standards of dress. As a guide you should dress to fit into the section in which you are working, but ensure that you adopt the higher of the appropriate standards for the section.

5. HOURS AND ATTENDANCE: Overall students should expect to work close to standard daily hours applying to salaried staff. It is expected that commitment to a project may result in additional hours in certain weeks. This should be balanced by time off in lieu.

Over the duration of the semester the total hours worked should not exceed standard company hours. Any requirement to work hours beyond this total, even at a student's request, must be agreed by the academic co-ordinator.

6. SECURITY AND CONFIDENTIALITY: If required by your sponsor you must sign and respect a Confidentiality and Non-disclosure agreement. In any event, as a condition of your Placement, and in consideration of the training provided, you are required to maintain the confidentiality of sponsor information. You must also comply with company procedures and standards concerning access to, and the use of, passwords, keys, documents and computer equipment. As a guide, remember that you are a privileged guest in the organisation, be more careful than the staff of the company. In particular, do not discuss company confidential matters with your friends or any other person. Do not use company facilities for your personal benefit, and always seek permission for access to materials or equipment.

7. PERFORMANCE: The reputation you establish in your training will stay with you - aim for excellence. You will be subject to normal company appraisal procedures, and additionally will be evaluated on behalf of the university. Establish what is expected of you and seek guidance on how you are progressing. Make use of the company and university staff assigned to counsel you.
