The project was endorsed and supported by the MTA as well as the former Brooklyn President, Marty Markowitz who saw the project as an opportunity develop the business district in Downtown Brooklyn. Another key supporter of the project, Mayor Bloomberg, believed that job development in places outside Manhattan would be a good thing for New York City’s economy. Although there is a lot of controversy about the availability of “affordable housing” within Atlantic Park, ACORN, the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, signed the affordable housing document with Forest City Ratner. This shows that there are people who believe in the project. Also, a big group of people who are in favor of this project were the construction workers who worked on the project itself because it brought job opportunities to the community.
Me, personally, I side with the opposition due to the fact that there is too much negative information surrounding the project. I believe that the developers of Atlantic Yards manipulated the system as well as deceived most of the members of the Brooklyn community. My biggest issue with the project is the fact that the CBA which is a “legally binding document” was pushed to the side. I do agree in a way with the supporters of the project because it is impossible to deny that this project brought jobs to the community and did indeed help gentrify the community but I am a firm believer that the community was greatly mislead. I hope that Brooklyn can find common ground and use this massive project to achieve its original goal which was to “create a vibrant community of all ages and income levels and provide the enhancement of life for the residents” (Atlantic Yards Community Benefits Agreement, pg.16)
