in the bath. Darming was on the phone with his wife, who he told that they should go visit more often later. We see Darming having a hard time with Erming, who did not fully understand what was going on and that his father was gone. Erming would still wake up and get ready to open the bath house like a regular day. Darming decides he will take Erming with him back to the city to live with him and his wife, since the area where the bath house is will be demolished anyway. As he is talking to his wife however, we see that she might to be too happy with the idea as she hangs up the phone after Darming tells her he will take his brother with him.
Before he can take Erming to the city, there is stuff he must do so he decides to leave Erming in a hospital for a while in order to get the stuff ready. We see however that Erming was causing trouble in the hospital and Darming had to go get him back. One day when Darming comes home, he finds Erming caring for a frequent customer of the bath house and he decides to open the bath house one more time before closing for good. When it is time to leave, Erming is unwilling to but Darming talks to him and we learn who important the bath house was for their father and how Darming has come to understand that.
The bath house was more than a simple bath house for Old Liu. He was acquainted and was friends with practically all of his customers. We saw several of the customers including a man who sang opera, a man who had problems with his wife and a man who had problems with loan sharks. We see how close these three men where with old Liu and Erming throughout the film as they helped them in some way or another. The bath house was an important place for all of them. Old Liu also told the story of how hard it was for the people in the town where Erming’s mom lived to be able to take a simple bath. This story strengthened the value of the bath house and also helped Darming understand the importance and value of it.
In the end, I think this film might reflect modern society in the way that old customs and traditions are being abandoned and forgotten and replaced with new ones. Darming had completely forgotten and abandoned his father and brother as well as their bath house. He goes back however and learns of the actual importance of the bath house and how he was neglecting his family. The fact that the area where the bath house used to be was going to be demolished to construct new buildings is also a way of how old traditions were being abandoned. The tradition of the baths was going to be gone. Darming had already gotten rid of that tradition as we see how he did not take baths but took showers instead and would rather take a shower than a bath. Overall the film had a nice message of filial piety, family, traditions, and community.
