It so happens that in today’s modern society, stereotyping happens to be a big problem and a common theme to conflict. I can go on and on about the countless amounts of stereotyping there is in this movie, but what’s more important is to generalize the problem we have in our society today. Ethnocentrism, the belief that one’s culture is superior to others, is an example of such discrimination and stereotyping in this movie. For example, a white cop makes fun of the name Shaniqua, a more common name of an African American culture. Shaniqua is one of his workers and he is very disrespectful to her throughout the entire movie. In the beginning of the movie when the Latina woman and Asian women get into a car accident, the Asian woman pronounces “braking” as “blaking” and the Latina woman emphasizes this mistake and ostracizes the Asian woman.
The last sociological perspective I’d like to bring up about the movie Crash is deviance. Deviance is a mode of actions that do not conform to the norms or values held by most members of a group or society (Giddens A3). Social conflict theorist link deviance to the power people hold in society. In the movie Crash, a White cop takes advantage of his role when he stops an African American couple for a simple suspicious act. He made the couple get out of the car even though he shouldn’t have. The White cop does this because he believes he has “power” to do so. When he does this, he proceeds to give the woman a pat down, groping her inappropriately in front of her husband. He has taken his actions out of hand and is taking advantage of his role as a cop.
In summary, Crash is a movie filled with many sociological descriptions and issues. I emphasized on a few sociological perspectives, such as; prejudice, discrimination, race and ethnicity, stereotyping, Thomas Theorem, ethnocentrism, and deviance. I could go on and on about all the different types of sociological views of this movie. I really enjoyed taking the time to look at this movie in a sociological perspective. I have learned a lot about our society and am more aware of the current discriminations and prejudices around me in my everyday life.
