- The strategic role of information systems at Tesco

In 1994, Tesco has operated on the internet on the internet. It was the first retailer in the world to offer a robust home shopping in 1996. But their website Tesco.com was launched in 2000 formally. According to the nature of Tesco’s business, the efficient IT system is essential. And also, Tesco’s international expansion strategy is responsible to the need to be sensitive to local expectations in other countries when Tesco make Joint Venture with local partners to enter their market.

Tesco achieve competitive advantages by making innovations for IT to get effective trade.

- IT infrastructure

The types of IT infrastructures at Tesco:

1. Hardware.

2. Software. (Radio Frequency identification (RFID) technology)

3. Databases.

4. Network. (Tesco website)

5. Procedures.

The first four components are part of the general information technology (IT) of an organization. The procedures are very specific to the information needed to answer a specific question. Tesco may have possible and specific procedures according to the nature of their business.

- The possible problems of managing data sources at Tesco and suggested solution

Possible problems

1: Data Security and Privacy, Cyber attack

2: IT process failures in business operations

3: Lack and low investment for IT innovations

Solution and suggestions

1: Tesco should have active monitoring processes to identify and deal with IT security. And then, Tesco should establish Cyber Security Team to investigate and mitigate the risks of cyber-attack. And Tesco must have Corporate Information confidentiality and security Contact for the business.

2: IT strategy have to be reviewed, updated and approved by Board of Directors and Executive Committee. Tesco should govern processes in place if new systems are installed and implemented. There should be business continuity plans for key business process.

3: There should be clear instructions for investments to maintain integrity and efficiency of IT innovations.

- Application of Internet Technology and telecommunications network at Tesco’s business operations

Tesco mainly used two technologies that can make their daily operations smoothly. They are

1) Internet Technology

2) Telecommunication network

- The role of e-commerce, M-commerce and their impact to the business

All these E-commerce and M-commerce systems help Tesco to operate faster, save time, money and energy and also for Tesco’s customers.

Mainly, the customers’ convenience and satisfaction come from the development of IT, E-commerce and M-commerce. And then, Tesco can earn a lot of profits by that result from their customers.

Therefore, these E-commerce and M-commerce result in positive effect to grow the business of Tesco.

- Data security and control issues; their business value

Data security and privacy might be the main problem for managing data resources at Tesco. And also, the failure of IT processes in retail operations, online and in store is causing impossible to trade.

If there is cyber-attack that breaks down Tesco IT security, it is possible that all the data such sales, customers, suppliers, company’s future plan, discount and promotion schemes might fall into competitor’s hands. So, Tesco must have to back up and kept their data and monitor their business processes.

- Ethical, social and political issues

For every technology which are used in Tesco, they must need to consider

- Does it breaks the information and property rights and obligation or not?

- Does it has accountability and controlled by the business?

- Does it affect the quality of life?

- Achieving Tesco’s competitive advantage with the use of information systems

According to the nature of business, Tesco have to work with large amount of data. So, these data need to be maintained and kept because these data are important and create competitive advantage for Tesco. Data can be used as information which is used to solve problems and helps to answer questions after data processing. But effective information system is needed to turn raw data to information.
