2.0 Background and Literature Review

In this section, there are a few literatures that have been selected to be primarily reviewed with other supporting literatures. This part will discussed main points which will cover about development of the system.

2.1 Feasibility Of the Project within the Scope and Time Frame

To analyze the practicality and viability is the main purpose of a feasibility study in project management. A good feasibility report acknowledge what are the problem that existed, the functionality of the system and what are the other alternative steps or procedure. It is step forward to plausible of success in of the system. Below study should able to provide enough information to decide whether:

- Is the system can be develop

- The whole project has a good chance of success.

- Is the system will benefits the users

- Alternatives that can be choosen

By doing so, a feasibility study enables a realistic view at both positive and negative aspect of the projects. It is an important tool to make the right decision as a wrong decision may lead to project failure and waste of time. This study should concentrate on the following field:

- Operational Feasibility

- Technical Feasbility

- Economic Feasibility

- Schedule Feasibility

All feasibilities study will be discussed in depth to analyze whether the new system/application will be successful or fail, whether it will finish within the time frame and whether the cost are as estimated.

- Operational Feasibility

Operational feasibility is one of the crucial part in measuring how well the system will perform, solve problems and takes advantages of the oppurtinities recognized during scope definition and how it satisfies the requirements listed in the requirement analysis phase of the system development. Operational feasibility measure the operational part of the project to be develop. By having high operational feasibility, the usability of the system is expected to be high. Thus, the essential question in conducting operational feasibility test include the following :

- Does the current mode of operation provide the correct output and response time ?

- Are the service flexible and expendables?

- Does the current mode of operation provides cost-effective information services to the business?

- Does the current mode of operation provides reliable services?

- Could there be a reduction in cost and increase benefits?

Operational feasibility usually consist of 6 frameworks which is called PIECES that can be assist in recognizing and identifying problems to be solved.

- Performances

- Does the current mode of operation provide correct output and response time?

- Test Time Query and Automation which is the new system will give a better result compared to the current manual process of the IE Team because the system remove any data duplicate. Previously, users need to use the CAMSTAR from the finisar intranet website to extract data. Not only users need to open multiple tab, the data extract from the CAMSTAR include duplicate data. Therefore, the IE Team will get faster response time and correct output data as will it will be able to reduce the time taken and duplicate data.

- Information

- Does current mode provide end users with timely pertinent , accurate and correct data?

- For this new system, we eliminate unwanted steps from the current manual process where its reduce human errors thus provide an accurate and correct data. Previously, IE Team had to calculate capacity planning by manual and sometimes there are human errors in calculating. Therefore, the system will eliminates any manual steps and convert it into automatic to avoid errors.

- Economy

- Does the current mode of operation provide cost effective information services to the business?

- The system is cost effective as it used Microsoft Excel which is free that can be used with low maintenance effort.

- Control

- Does the current mode of operation offer effective control against security of data and information?

- This new system will only can be used by those who has access to Finisar database which required end users to apply at IT department.

- Efficiency

- Does the current mode of operation make maximum use of available resource?

- A scalable application can process a larger workload with a proportional increase in system resource usage. Thus, increase of workload to a scalable application will use twice as many as system resources meanwhile an unscalable application can exhausts system resource. Excessive process and thread allocation may cause operating system thrashing. Thus, to develop an efficient and scalable application, bind argument is used. SQL statement with bind argument placeholders is hard parsed once and then soft parsed with different bind arguments. Hard parse is a very CPU-intensive operation while soft parse skips optimization and row source and proceeds to execution (faster process than hard parse). However, to maximize the efficiency and scalability is by minimizing parsing which is by using PL/SQL, optimized for database access

- Service

- Does the current mode of operation provide reliable services? It is flexible and expendables?

- Microsoft excel is a very flexible tool which end users can edit, delete and creating many things. However , it is also important to determicne how the application perform under pressure and scale. One of the counter is by developing the simplest method in automation. This is to avoid the application/system to be hang and out of memory.
