Finally, fire fighter training in large and medium cities involves mainly training on earthquakes, weather disasters, building explosions airplane crash, building collapse, Urban Search and Rescue (USAR), communication support and building collapse (Department). These are some of the common disasters that occur in large and medium cities while for small cities the training emphasises on building collapse and actual fires on buildings and properties. This is because for higher scale disasters the small towns rely on support from large cities fire departments. The training for fire fighters in small towns is therefore less intense compared to the training for fire fighters in large and medium cities.
Geographical location of a city dictates the type of training that the fire fighters have to undergo before being certified. Cities that are located on the coast concentrate their training on disasters that are mainly caused by seas and oceans. These disasters include; hurricanes, flooding, ship rescue missions and marine animals’ control. This will not exclude building explosions and collapse, earthquakes and USAR. The level of training will depend on the size of the city. For small cities he training may not involve air rescue teams, but for medium and large cities helicopter rescue missions may form part of the training.
For cities that are located on the desert, the common hazards that they face are sand storms heat waves for hot deserts and severe cold temperatures for cold deserts. The fire training in such cities involves mainly training on how to sensitize the population on the disasters for the disasters cannot be suppressed. The training involves fighting fire under severe conditions of strong winds and use of other fire suppression methods apart from the traditional water. This so because in hot deserts water is scares so the training emphasises the use of gases. The training also involves building explosions and collapse.
Forested areas experience wild fires, which cause massive destruction of the natural environment, loss of properties and lives. Fire fighting training in such areas involves training on how to prevent, suppress and extinguish such fires. It also involves search rescue as many are reported of not being able to trace their way back when in the forest. This training resembles that given to forest guards.
In conclusion fire fighting training differs depending on the size of the city and the geographical location of an area. This is evident as the requirements of the large, medium and small cities vary.
