Cons -

- People have been given freedom to choose between two toilets depending on their financial capability.

Preferred alternative with rationale

By letting people to contribute in this alternative we are inculcating a sense of ownership in them. By incorporating inputs from villagers regarding privacy constraints we made sure that woman privacy is secured. Since we are giving choice to villagers to choose between both the designs people are getting a right to choose and some villagers who cannot afford the Bio toilets can go for flush toilets. In this way the water requirement for toilets can also be reduced as some people will be using bio toilets which are water efficient. So with this solution we are fulfilling all the criteria.

Predicted outcome:

Given the freedom of choice people may willingly install the toilet of their chose which also brings some sort of sense of ownership and also we can reap the advantages of water efficiency along with bio gas energy. It can make the project reach 100 percent.

Plan for implementation:

As part of spreading awareness among the villagers towards use of toilet we will be using effective sources like ASHA and Anganwadi workers, Gram Panchayat, Public Health Centre, Children to bring an attitudinal shift in the villagers.

The ASHA and Anganwadi workers will be divided into groups and will be responsible for certain geographical parts of the villages. These workers will disseminate the consequences of going for open defecation and the benefit of privacy for women. The public Health centre will have elaborate campaign explaining the benefits of using toilets. Members of Gram Panchayat will discuss the pros and cons of the two types of toilets. Other mediums like movies, Nuked Natak by children will also be used.

For the installation of Toilets, people will be asked to bear some portion of the cost in order to create sense of ownership and this will ensure long term sustainable use of Toilets.

Contingency Plan:

In case the above alternative does not work GSSS will build community toilet in select locations in the village. The NGO will ask for finance from the government for building these toilets. The community toilets will provide hands on experience to the people about the change in hygiene in the locality and may lead to an attitudinal change in the mind of villagers.
