Writing Exercise (Individual)
Press conferences will be held at the resort in response to some incidents. Joe Kimball asks you to prepare an investigation report on ONE of the following scenarios before he addresses the media.
To practice the fish bone analysis of a problem and present your analysis in writing, please:
- Explain with examples the causes of the issue in the scenario you have chosen.
- Further investigate the case and find out root cause (s) of the issue.
- Suggest how Joe should approach the issue.
- You may need time to think of recommendations, so in this exercise, you can just post an analysis (300-500 words) of the chosen scenario to “weekly sharing” on Blackboard latest by week 12.
Scenarios for the Press Conference:
- Food Poisoning Cases
Massive food poisoning cases were found yesterday at one of your restaurants. 6 guests suffering from food poisoning are still staying at a hospital on the island. The news was widely reported in the local media. You are calling for a press conference to explain the causes, and announce company policy and preventive measures in handling the crises. What have you done so far?
- Local Staff on Strike
About 100 local staff working in food and beverage, housekeeping and marina club of your resort went on strike this week. They asked for a 5% pay rise this year, the same rate given to local staff of other hotels. It was reported in the local media that your resort has been making profits in the last two years but the salary level for local staff is the lowest in the industry. You need to clarify the situation and explain to the public about your employment policy.
- Rumors about the Management
Recently, you have been approached by the local press about Joe’s decision to sell the resort to one of your competitors in the region. There is also rumor about quitting of more expatriates from the resort, including the current CEO. You need to deny the rumors by hosting a press conference with the local media. However, you also need to explain what efforts have been made to address the high turnover of expatriates.
