The APA Ethical principles of psychologists and code of conduct (n.d.) and Specialty Guidelines for Forensic Psychology (2011) has a set of principles and standards that professionals are obligated to uphold; Respect for one’s right and dignity, not to belittle or defame an individual’s character (Principle E), Boundaries of Competence, understanding the limits of practice and knowledge (Guideline 2.01, Standard 2.01 [b]), Unfair Discrimination (Standard 3.01, Guideline 2.08), or Harassment due to gender, gender identity, age, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, race, culture, or national origin, language or disability (Standard 3.03, Guideline 2.08), and Interpreting results while considering linguistic and cultural differenced (Standard 9.06). If the practitioner feels as though there is an issue abiding by the guidelines, principles and standards, which have been set forth by APA, the evaluation should not be conducted (APLS, 2011, Guideline 2.07).
In conclusion, a practitioner has an obligation to the individual in which they are evaluating and not informing the inmate of why the evaluation is being conduct and having their consent is not upholding the obligation. When working with multicultural/diverse population one should be competent about the individual culture and not assume that all people from the particular culture are the same or act the same.
